PRESIDENT JOHNSON ASSUMES BURDEN OF OFFICE:
President Lyndon B. Johnson takes over the duties of the most powerful position in the world with an address to a joint session of Congress. He asks the help of all in the days ahead. The burdens are many, especially in these early weeks. He meets with Cabinet members and other officials as he takes up the reins that were dropped by the lifeless hands of President John F. Kennedy. Later, Mr. Johnson visits the martyred President's grave. He also poses for a family portrait.
AIR DISASTER: 118 DIE IN CRASH OF CANADIAN JET:
Four minutes after taking off from Montreal in a driving rainstorm, a Canadian four-engine jet plunges to earth and burns. All 118 persons aboard the plane die in Canada's worst Air disaster in history.
