THE JOHNSON LANDSLIDE
President Lyndon Baines Johnson swamps Senator Barry Morris Goldwater to be elected 36th president of the United States. The voice of the people was heard in the land, sixty-eight million people going to the polls to choose the man who will lead them during the next four crucial years. Mr. Johnson receives more than 61% of the popular vote and 486 electoral votes to Senator Goldwater's 52. It was an election that has political scientists wondering. Party lines were crossed, some local candidates ran ahead of the national tickets and split tickets were obviously common.
Robert F. Kennedy, who came to New York to run, is elected senator. His brother, Edward, is re-elected senator from Massachusetts.
Pierre Salinger, former White House Press Secretary, .goes down to defeat at the hands of G.O.P. candidate George Murphy in California.
Thus it went, from coast-to-coast. Now, as usual, a nation split by a campaign will reunite itself behind its president.
